GENERAL OBJECTIVES

The student will be able, in Spanish, to:

  • Participate in all social situations or events taking place in the personal, public, professional or academic sphere.
  • Recognize specific features of Latin American culture in order to integrate within that culture.
  • Demonstrate appropriate communicative skills.
  • Share information and express opinions, experiences, ideas and feelings, on both academic and social/cultural themes, within a variety of relationships, attitudes and ambiences.

 

CURRICULAR APPROACH

CPP is based on an approach which allows prioritizing communication within a specific situation and context; it promotes the development of the four basic communication skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. An interactive methodology is utilized.

(*) These include, among others: Conversations about art, Photography, Painting, Drawing, Film History, Latin American Theatre, Yoga, Physical conditioning.

Levels: CPP takes into account that all students enter the program at the Beginner level. Adjustments will be made for students entering with prior ability in Spanish. The levels are set according to the Common European Framework of Reference: Beginner 1 and 2, Intermediate 1 and 2 and Advanced 1 and 2, based on placement tests. Groups will be small: no more than 15 students per group.

 

At the same time, students are encouraged to participate in a wide variety of clubs and sports teams with Costa Rican students to help develop their ability to become a part of the Universidad Latina de Costa Rica culture and help prepare themselves for their future incorporation as regular students once the CPP program is completed.

OUTCOMES

Student profile upon satisfactory completion of the Spanish Immersion College Preparatory Program (CPP):

  • Command of the Spanish language, allowing for accurate and fluent usage.
  • Ability, in Spanish, to:
    • Debate current global issues
    • Defend personal ideas with coherent arguments and counter-arguments.
    • Produce texts with proper organization, grammar and cohesion.
    • Participate spontaneously in a conversation with native Spanish speakers concerning aspects of daily life (family, hobbies, work, travel, current events, etc).
  • Knowledge of Costa Rican/Latin American arts and culture.
  • Understanding and usage of Spanish idiomatic phrases and idioms.
  • Fluency and functionality in Spanish on an academic level appropriate for university study.

INCLUDED IN THE PROGRAM:

  • Participation in three core classes: Spanish language immersion, Costa Rican/Latin American culture and Building Academic Readiness.
  • The use of the library Resource Center for Learning and Research – CRAI (both onsite and digital, with access to more than 80,000 publications on line).
  • High speed internet access on campus
  • Access to the Virtual Campus of the Universidad Latina of Costa Rica
  • All didactic material
